Dikmen Village & Dikmen
Municipality
Dikmen Village is in the
district of Girne Town. Our village is in the center
position with 15 minutes drive to Girne and 10 minutes
drive to Lefkosa Capital City. Its population is 2608
according to recent 2006 census. The village was managed
by Village Headman (Muhtar) in between 1974 – 1986. The
Municipality was established by the first Mayor Besim
Akesen (who was the Headman of the village) in 1986.

Historical Water Mills
1700’s
The two of the historical
Water Mills in Dikmen village was build in 1700’s during
the Ottoman period (1571 – 1878) in Cyprus. The mills
were operating and managing by the Mill families and
served to the local people within the village and
surrounding villagers. The Mills were very important in
daily life of Cypriots. It was the main part of the
culture and local economy. The Mills were functioning
for grinding the barley or wheat for producing semolina,
cracked wheat, and flour for bread, pastas, pastries and
sweets. Today, the Mills are under protection by Dikmen
Municipality since the end of 2006. The Mills
Conservation Project covers the areas of restoring the
mills and improving the socio-culture and socio-economy
of the villagers.

The Mill Stones
The Mill Stones are imported
from Marne Valey, north of France. The stones are named
as French Buhr Stones and known as the best mill stones
in the world. These stones are made for the quality
flour production from wheat or barley.
Each Mill Stone has its
companion. One is constant bed stone and the other one
is known as active grinder stone. In the Mills that
works with the power of water or wind, the active stone
is supported by metal knob and spin by the bolt. Both
bed stone and active stone has its featured contrary
grinding lines carved on them and function for break and
grind. The stones should adjusted evenly to be able to
get proper and quality flour. The each stone is
680.38 kg
in weight,
1.37 cm in diameter
and 20.32 cm in gravity.
Nature
The
village is situated on the mountain range and has its
own characteristic natural beauties. Our mountain ranges
is the home for wild plants as well as endemic plant
species that are
Arabis CYPRIA,
Onosma CAESPITOSA, Dianthus CYPRIUS,
Sideritis CYPRIA. In addition to this,
the track mountain roads are eligible only with
authorized – licensed Tourist Guide for walking.
